When life gets hard, it’s easy to back down - give up - throw in the towel - raise the white flag and call it quits.

But it’s in those moments when you reach out for help, you can find the ray of sunshine through the clouds. I am truly thankful to have family and friends who support me following my dreams on the other side of the country - even if I don’t exactly know what those dreams are quite yet…

The perfect transportation balance between entertainment and disappointment.

The Suburban Station train announcer is more entertaining than the Price is Right. I feel like at any moment the next announcement will be

“Jessa! Welcome to Philadelphia. Your train is here… COME ON DOWN!”

Absolutely no prerecorded monotone announcements here. If you’re going to wait for a train, you might as well feel like a game show contestant, right? I mean who doesn’t like Bob Barker?

And I guess being kicked off by a grumpy conductor is about the opposite end of the entertainment spectrum. Apparently, Philadelphia only lets bikes ride between the hours of 9:30am and 4:30pm, and after 6:30pm. So now I can sit, and wait for the next train - wait an hour and ten minutes for another train, to be exact. Some lessons I guess you have to learn the hard way.

One of these days I will flawlessly get on the train, get off the train. Leave from the platform and arrive at my intended destination without any trouble. One of these days, when I’m not the new kid in town.

For now I still feel like the California girl stuck in a Philly world.

Ignorance is bless when it comes to being a Giants fan.

Since the disappearing phone act in Canada, I’ve been blissfully disconnected from ESPN updates (because my original iPhone complete with 2G and EDGE connection can’t handle any new apps - The OS must stand for Old School instead of operating system). In my mind the Giants were on top of the Division, beating the world, naturally. That is until the fateful text from a friend broke my radio silence.

“So Melky Cabrera…”

My first thought was my friend was taking the opportunity to gloat how the All-Star MVP was becoming a critical Giant’s king pin, and how I, the Philadelphia resident was missing all the action. My hopes were almost immistead crushed when their response was far from complimentary.

“Suspended. Steroids.”

Two words that can ruin any baseball fan’s day… and when used in conjunction with a player on your team? Just down right heartbreaking.

Cheers to having to suffer through the season with yet another star player injured, out, or in this case suspended for the next 50 games. Good timing Melky.

Guess Giants fans won’t have any melk to go with our cookies for awhile.

Here we go. The entire summer has been preparation for the next five days of racing - the countless hours on the river, the early mornings, the sleepless nights. It’s all for the next week of racing.

We can’t control what others have done in the same amount of time, but we can have confidence that our preparation is sufficient, that we are well prepared for battle.

We have the best equipment - the only winged Resolute 8+ on the water. We have the best coach - who has a clear direction and thoughtful insight. We may not have “the best athletes” no one on their own is remarkable in their accomplishments. No oarsman is leaps and bounds above another. However, I strongly believe we have the best TEAM. And at the line of scrimmage, the point of contact, when the red light turns green against some of the best teams in the world, I could not have more faith and confidence than in the men I will have in front of me this week.

So here’s to the unfinished business, and the Triple Crown, which has yet to be achieved by a Vesper crew.

Philly Problems: No Giants Games...

Now that Victorino is a Dodger, it may be easier to try and make room in my baseball loving heart for the Phillies. But in the past year, the Giants filled the whole in my heart before any other team. And now, all I get are the depressing updates of shutouts, missed opportunities and losses. There’s nothing to watch, no announcing, no heart wrenching drama, only heart breaking loss.

And if the Giants loss this game after leading 7-0 at one point, I’m not sure my little heart can handle it.
